Kitchen Safety

Kitchen Safety :

Facts: More fires start in the kitchen than any other room in your house with unattended cooking being the number one cause of kitchen fires. Young children and the elderly are at the highest risk for burn injuries in the kitchen.

Kitchen Safety Tips

  • If a pan or skillet catches fire slide the lid over the pan and turn the stove off. Leave the lid on until the pan is cool.

  • Do not wear loose fitting clothes while cooking these can catch fire much easier.

  • Unattended cooking is the number one cause of cooking fires so do not become distracted or leave food unattended.

  • Keep a 3 Feet ‘No Kid Zone’ around your stove and turn all pot handles inward facing the wall to prevent burns.

  • If you have an oven fire, close the oven door and turn off the heat. Then call 911 to have the Fire Department respond even if the fire appears to be out.

  • Keep an ABC fire extinguisher within reach and know how to use it in case of a fire. Do not use water to extinguish a grease fire, it can cause splashing and spread the fire and remember to never use flour, baking soda, or baking powder to put out a grease fire.

  • Avoid cooking when you have taken medicine that makes you drowsy or if you have been drinking alcohol.

  • Keep the area around your stove clear of towels, papers, pot holders or anything else that could possibly burn.

  • Do not leave electrical cords dangling over the edges of counters and keep them off of stovetop burners.

  • Regularly clean your cooking equipment to prevent accumulation of food items or grease that can cause fires.

Remember: If you receive a burn use cool water on it and seek medical attention if the burn is a serious one.
